‘Carry on Sergeant-Major!’

Lyon2

Capt Hugh Lyon MC, Adjutant of the 6th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry (seen above in the trenches), is already the subject of another post on this blog, but I’ve just realised something else. Old Rugbeian, infantry officer, prisoner of war, and Headmaster between 1931 and 1948, he was also a poet, and a notebook of his poems was confiscated but returned by the German officer who took him prisoner in 1918. As well as poems, he also wrote a song which became rather popular, published by Boosey and Hawkes in 1918. ‘The Company Sergeant Major’ can be heard here, sung by Harry Dearth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OigfQMXYv_0 What a multi-talented man!
